Zeus, God of Thunder

After dozing in the sunshine after a good Sunday lunch , I picked up an old Review section of the Telegraph and found Bettany Hughes ‘Words of Wisdom’ from ancient Greece. It struck me like a bolt of lightening thrown down from on high by Zeus, the god of thunder, that their ’10 rules for living’ are just as relevant today as they were then.

So here are my 1o tips for preparing to launch a new product adapted from the rules of the most powerful civilization in the ancient world…

#1. Embrace New Ideas – The Greeks were big on welcoming new ideas that lay outside the horizon of their experience. You too will have to build such new ideas into your product launch if you want it to be a success

#2. Be Passionate – Eros was not just about sexual passion but also passion for life and for business. Be passionate about helping your prospects get what they want and they will reciprocate. Warning: Do not fall in love with your product

#3. Argue – The ancients worshiped the god of persuasion, Peith0. You must join the argument going on inside your ideal customer’s head. It is only when you can do this effectively that you can say you have an intuitive feel for what your market wants. Without this you launch sequence will go PHUT…

#4. Struggle – The Greeks did everything they could to fulfill their potential. Helping your prospects do the same in every way you can will ensure that your product launch makes you a ton of money

#5. Be Wise – To the inhabitants of Athens, this implied an ability to make things better in the here and now. Each of your pre-launch events must offer a take-away that your audience can put to use immediately and get them closer to their goal. This builds buzz and excitement as well as your credibility.

#6. Be a Snob – In ancient Greece, this meant be the best you can. A desire for perfection will paralyze your business but your product should be the best you can make it in the time allowed

#7. Be a Celebrity – Oscar Wilde said “There is only one thing worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about at allAchilles chose to die young and famous. A product launch will position you as the go to guy in your niche. You may not want to be known as a guru but being a thought leader is a must if you want to dominate your market

#8. Make Poetry – Your core myth – the story running a golden thread through your product launch – has to resonate like poetry to a sun-kissed lover on the shores of the Mediterranean. Talking to your people on an emotional level is much more powerful than relating the dry facts and figures. These will be forgotten in minutes. Your story will resonate for weeks or months.

#9. Live in the Modern World – Socrates famously said “ An unexamined life is not worth living” You should be a seeker of game changing ideas. Ideas that will bring new meaning to your prospects’ lives. Coming up with innovative and original products and services that disrupt the market will bring you long term success.

#10. Party – A quick glance at the goings-on depicted on an ancient Greek vase will tell you that they just loved to party. Your product launch events have to be fun too. When you entertain people and make them laugh, they learn more quickly and you prove you are a fun guy that everyone wants to call a friend. Just take a look at good ole cuzin Andie and his Video Boss product Launch for the evidence…

These 10 marketing tips may come from early Mediterranean history but they are no less relevant for that. Put them to work in your business now. ThenĀ  contact us to take the next step to your product launch…
